Need explanation for this quote please "trust is not something you win, it's something you build"?

-I mean In my mind, you need to earn (win) the trust of someone, right?

So, i don't seem to understand the concept of "building the trust "properly, if someone could help me, that would be great. Thanks

ps: It's a quote i just heard in a tv-show called " Nikita"

Sorry for the mistake, i might have done, English is not my first language...Winning trust is less reliable than building it, since by building it, you know you're doing it right, and people will respect you for being autonomous and knowing they can trust you to do something. By "winning" trust, people can betray you at any time because they'll think you're a self-entitled jerk that doesn't care about them.

Basically if you "win" trust, you may trust that person but that person might not trust you or vice versa. By building it, both people will trust each other.

Just my 2 cents...
Hi! Trust is not a prize to be won in some competition...there r no competitions held 2 see who is trustworthy or loyal.... trust is like a building...u build it up from scratch...wid a strong foundation....brick by brick... the foundation is the friendship or relationship between 2 people....the times v share, the problems v help 2 solve, the situations wher v prove 2 be gud friends...the times v stand by them..those moments r the real bricks that help 2 build trust..
trust isnt something that you can get right away you must prove to someone and build it up over an amount of time
