-In the book: "I was with a friend one night," she started to explain, taking a long, deep breath. "And something terrible happened." 鈥?"There was a fire. I made it out鈥nd he didn't." 鈥?"Anyway," Luce went on, "afterwards, I couldn鈥檛 remember the details, how it happened. What I could remember - what I told the judge, anyway - I guess they thought I was crazy."
How would I quote this??In the U.S., For short passages, put double quotes around the whole passage you are quoting and single quotes around any internal quotations:
"Luce spoke. 'I was with a friend one night,' she started to explain" (Author page).
For a long passage (or when there is a lot of internal quoting), make a block quote and use double quotes internally.
In the passage above, there are so many ellipses, I would try to break up the passage into smaller bits just so it looks less awkward.Since the passage already has "I was with a friend....I was crazy." use " 'I was with a friend....I was crazy.' " to indicate that you are quoting a quote.
.
just go ahead and put some quotes around what you just typed and then say you got it from the book where you got it from and then rest easy.
